In recent years ever greater use has been made in growth analysis of the functional method, in the course of which mathematical functions (usually polynomes and asymptotic function) are fitted to the primary data, after which the momentary values of various parameters are determined by means of differential calculus from the growth functions obtained. Using the Hunt-Parsons (1974) growth analysis programme, the effect of N fertilization (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg N/ha) on the dynamics of growth and growth parameters was investigated in two maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids with different genotypes: NK PX 9283 (370) SC and P 3732 (450) SC. Plant samples were taken for destructive growth analysis on 13-16 occasions. For the purposes of comparison, a logistic function was fitted to the basic data when characterising dry matter accumulation. On the basis of the present studies, the Hunt-Parsons growth analysis programme can be seen to be widely applicable in maize production research
