Lipid peroxidation and activity of certain part of the biological antioxidant defense mechanism in blood of fattening bulls with different growth rate

The authors separated fattening bulls of Hungarian flekvieh genotypes based on their weaning weight ((A, n=10 weaning weight250 kg; B, n250 kg)). The investigastions were carried out within the period of self-performance test. It was found that the bulls in the small group (A) have lower weight gain during the whole period of fattening as compared to the bulls in the large group (B). The blood plasma content of vitamin E and total carotenes changed according to actual intake but there was no significant difference between the groups. The glutathione peroxidase activity of blood plasma and catalase activity of red blood cell haemolysate also did not differ between the groups. The malondialdehyde content of blood plasma changed markedly in the case of the large group as compared to the small one. The glutathione peroxidase activity of red blood cell haemolysate increased gradually during the last month of fattening in both groups. The results suggest that the different rate of growth-development has an effect on the rate of lipid peroxidation and also on the activity of the biological antioxidant defense mechanism
