Qualitative development in wood working industry
1997
Nemeth, J. (Soproni Egyet., Sopron (Hungary))
In future, wood working industry (which utilizes the wood harvested) can only be developed towards better quality. In this field, three basic principles are prevailing throughout the world, including Hungary: (1) Atmospheric CO2 fixed in the course of life-functions of the forest must be stabilized in the trees in the form of carbon compounds to an extent as great as possible, and last as long as possible. Deriving from this, the lifetime of wood products must be long; in the course of timber processing there must be produced as little waste as possible; and timberbased waste must be recycled. (2) Among fossile energy carriers, it is wood the burning of which constitutes the energy-producing process less harmful for the environment, since wood when burnt emits as much CO" as it has fixed in the form of C. However, the level of CO" pollution of the atmosphere by non-fossile energy carriers (wind, sun, etc.) is even lower, so that the ratio of using wood and its products for energetic purposes must be low. (3) In order to make the utilization of wood rentable, it must comprehend the whole of the wood harvested, and the products of wood working industry must enable final consumers' timber products to be of high elasticity and stability, good aesthetic design, and high use-value. The basic principles of qualitive development are the same for countries with an advanced wood working industry (North America, Western and Northern Europe) and the ones less advanced in this respect (including Hungary), whereas feasibility requires tasks of different difficulty
