Proposal for the new protein evaluation system for ruminants in Hungary

A metabolizable protein (MF in Hungarian) system is expected to replace the crude protein system for ruminants in Hungary. The system is based on the elements of other protein evaluation systems developed recently. Metabolizable protein is the sum of microbal and bypass (UDP) true protein truly digested in the small intestine. For the efficiencies of utilization of MF for milk, growth, pregnancy and wool production, 0,65; 0,50; 0,50 and 0,40 are proposed respectively. MF requirements for maintenance are considered to be 3,41 W(0,75) for cattle and 2,60 W(0,75) for sheep. The net requirement of milk is based on milk protein content. Net requirement values of pregnancy were adopted from ARC (1980) and the proposals for growth of cattle and of sheep originate from NRC (1985) and from ARC (1980), respectively. Each feed has two protein values (MFE, MFN), both including digestible UDP and digested true microbial protein predicted either from microbal energy supply (FOM) or from available degradable protein (RDP). The formulas proposed for the calculation of protein values of feeds are as follows: MFE g/kg DM = 0.9 (UDP - ADIN x 6.25) + 160FOM x 0.8 x 0.8 ; MFN g/kg DM = 0.9 (UDP - ADIN x 6.25) + RDP x 0.9 x 0.8 x 0.8 . Microbial energy supply is expressed as fermented organic matter (FOM), which equals digested organic matter excluding fermentation products, UDP, digestible fat and bypass starch. The new protein evaluation system is expected to be introduced in Hungary in 1999
