Prospects of sugar production oriented to better quality

The prospective EU accession of Hungary created a new situation in the field of the country's food industry. Mainly in consequence of the severe market regulation which is valid at present within the European Union, and probably will be valid also at the time of the entry of Hungary into it, it cannot be expected that exports of considerable amounts of Hungarian sugar may be pushed into the background even on domestic markets. Therefore products must hold their ground, from both qualitative and economic point of view, in an environment raising new requirements, or alse it will be impossible to cover Hungarian needs with sugar produced in this country and to sustain Hungarian sugar industry on the long run. In the field of regulation concerning the quality of products of the sugar industry, the adoption of EU rules has been accomplished. As a result of several years activities of the Hungarian sugar factories, considerable improvement in quality can be observed, and the ratio of products meeting highest EU quality requirements is rising. It seems to be a realistic goal that, by the time of the entry of Hungary into the European Union, the entire volume of granulated sugar, the product manufactured in the greatest quantity, shall come up to the EU-2 quality level
