The response of trickle irrigated chile peppers to the nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer

This experment was conducted to determine the response of chillies peppers to the application of nitrogen and phosphorous liquid fertilizer through the trickle irrigation system. Three levels of nitrogen fertilizer were used (0,112,224 kg N/ha) as urea. Phosphorous fertilizer was used in two forms:three levels of phosphorous as orthophosphoric acid (0,56,112 kg P/ha) and one level as glycerophosphate (56 kg P/ha). The application of nitrogen fertilizer through trickle line did not have a significant effects on yield of green and red chillies. The limited response in yield of green and red chillies to nitrogen application may be result of the high initial concentrations of nitrogen in the soil. There was no significant yield response to phosphorus applied through the trickle lines as either orthosphoric acid or glycerophosphate. Plant tissue analysis showed that the levels NO3-N in chillies leaves and petioles responded significantly to N rate,and decreased as the plant approached maturity.It appeared that if NO3-N content was maintained above 1000 ppm in chillies leaves and above 4000 in the petioles through mid-season, yields in Mesilla Valley might not be reduced. Increasing levels of phosphorus or source of P fertilizer had no effect on NO3-N and P content of the leaves and petioles. The lack of increased P uptake with phosphorus fertilization needs further study. This study in a summary of only one year data, but it does strongly indicate the need for additional studies to define more precisely the optimum nutrient levels in chillies tissue at various growth stages
