The economic considerations to determine the level of strong and storage strategy of meat in Iraq

Meat in all types is the most important source of protein for human consumption. Accordingly, it is cosidered as one off strategic commodities. Since meat is perishable, it requires a great deal of knowledge in storage to preserve its quality and to maintain an appriate flow of the meat in response to consumers demand. In addition, storage of large quantities of meat for a long period requires specific marketing policies that take in to account immediate and future demand. This work showed that available cold storage capacities are below the capacities required to meat imported quantities and general demand, morever, the use of these facilities is inefficient. In oder to determine future needs of storage the demand for meat in year 2000 is estimated. Accordingly it was found that additional capacities of 30000 tons per month should by available. Current storage capacities are only sufficient for storing quantities of meat that can meet domestic demand for less than two months. Under the assumption that the storage capacities should be large enough to hold at least one-third of annual domestic consumption of meat, it was estimated that an additional cold storages of 23109 thousand tons are required. This estimation is based on many technical and economic aspects of storage
