The survey was carried out in the winter season 1989-1990 to determine the species of arthropods overwintering on date palm trees, Phoenix dactylifera L.,in the middle of Iraq. The search was done on the leaf bases and in the fiber surrounding the tree heads. The following insects were encountered in different stages: Batrachedra amydraula Meyrick., Ommatissus binotatus De Bergevin., Arenipes sabella (Hampson), Eurygaster integriceps Put., Nezara viridula L., Theretra alecto L., Ocnerogyia amanda stgr., Ephestia cautella Walker. In addition, some other pests were also found overwintering on the trees. Some saprophytic mites including Bechsteinia sp., Kleemannia sp., Spinibadella sp., Neophyllobius sp., Eutogenes sp., Sanioaulus nudus., Parasitus fimetorum, Oplitis near Leonardiana. Also a scorpion,Mesobuthus eupeus Koch. and a pseudoscorpion, Rhaiochelifer sp. were recorded. However, no mites of economic importance such as the date dusts mite, Oligonychus afrasiaticus (Mc Gregor) were encountered. These findings may prove helpful in future programs for controlling insect and mite pests
