Fukuoka prefecture has 78,800 ha of paddy soils occupying 15.9% of the whole prefectural area. Analytical data of clay mineralogical composition of paddy soils was used for the preparation of a map of clay mineral distribution. Based on the mineral index and the magnitude of specific surface area, 288 paddy soil samples were classified into 6 categories. Namely, smectite-dominant , smectite-abundant, smectite-fair, chlorite-type, kaolin mineral-type, and noncrystalline/layersilicate mineral-type. Paddy soils were mapped by using these six categories. The map thus prepared with compared with the areal distribution of paddy-rice yield and was evaluated to be useful in predicting the rice-growing as well as environment-conserving capabilities of soils at the prefectural level
