Ammonium sulphate (S/A) and two compound formulations: NPKS 25:5:5:5 and NPK 20:10:10 annually applied at 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg/N/ha were compared in a field experiment which lasted ten years. Two leaves and a bud and mature leaf were sampled and analysed for nutrients annually to determine the effects of the fertilizer types and rates. The nitrogen fertilizer types did not have significantly different leaf nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium contents. The phosphorus content was lower in the S/A and the non fertilizer treatment compared to the two compound fertilizers but the control treatment had the lowest content. The leaf content of nitrogen and manganese in the mature leaf increased linearly with rates of the nitrogen, while the leaf contents of potassium, calcium, magnesium and aluminium decreased linearly with increasing fertilizer rates regardless of the fertilizer type
