Relationship between mineral absorption and plasma mineral concentration in growing goats

Ten growing castrated-goats were used in two balance trials to clarify the relationship between mineral absorption and plasma mineral concentration. Four goats (Exp. 1) initially weighing 25.6 kg and 6 goats (Exp. 2) initially weighing 10.5 kg were fed diets differing in mineral content, consisting of 50% Italian ryegrass hay and 50% concentrate on a DM basis. The results obtained were as follows; (1) there were no relationship between intake and absorption of Ca and P. but the retention of these minerals were positive, (2) absorption of Mg, Na and K increased linearly with the increased intake of these minerals, but most goats showed negative retention, (3) plasma Ca decreased linearly from 10.6 to 9.4 mg/dl when ca absorption increased from 22.6 up to 30.3 mg/day/kg body weight, (4) plasma Mg and Na increased by a break point at absorption rates of 36.3 and 23.2 mg/day/kg body weight, respectively
