[The influence of the amount of available boron in the soil on flax yield and the dependence of boron fertilizers efficiency upon the agrochemical characteristics of the soil]

Over the period 1985-1995 fertilisation trials were conducted in the Upyte Research Station. The optimum amount of available B for flax was about 0.3-0.7 mg per 1 kg soil. The available B content within the limits 0.8-1.1 mg per 1 kg soil was detrimental to the plants and reduced the flax yield. The efficiency of boron fertilizers depended on agrochemical characteristics of the soil. Application of boron fertilisers was beneficial, when there were more than 150 mg/kg of available phosphorus, 2.3 of humus, less than 0.8 mg/kg of available boron and approximately 2.5-3.2 mg/kg of available Cu and 0.05-0.08 mg/kg of available Mo in the arable layer of soddy gleyic drained loam whose pH was slightly alkaline.
