Pirksts, V. | Rozenberga, V. (Latvian State Institute of Agrarian Economics, Riga (Latvia). Dept. of Agriculture Development and Economics Relations)
The given report deals with the land reform in the Latvia's countryside as well as with the reorganization of former collective farms into private peasant farms, household plots, subsidiary farms, statutory companies etc. Most of these units are small. Considering the tendency of European countries to reduce the number of small farms, the prospects for possible future farming units are discussed. The optimal sizes of private peasant farms are suggested. The importance of effective cooperation of farmers as well as the role of a rational use of land and machinery are explained. The profitability of small farms specializing in fruit and vegetable growing is considered.
