The given research deals with the development of Latvia's national economy within the framework of the global political and economic processes, yet preserving the country's national identity. The global development trends in the 21st century discussed at the UNO Conference (UNCED) in 1992 as well as the realization program Baltic 21 worked out by the countries of the Baltic region for 1997 are analysed. The place of Latvia in the European market and the importance of agricultural production in the country are explained. Measures required for furthering and promoting the development of agriculture are suggested. The role of LUA in the development of agriculture is emphasized
