The inspection of weed infestation in the main agricultural crops in Belarus was carried out in 1996. The results of the inspectation showed that in comparison with 1986 not only weed infestation increased but also the composition of weed species and the number of separate species changed. The increase of weed infestation and other changes were caused by the complicated economic conditions in the rural districts due to the transition to market relations. Factors causing or influencing weed infestation were studied. It was stated that they were: giving up stubble breaking and fall ploughing, changing the whole complex of soil preparation technology, insufficient seed cleaning before sowing, insufficient application of mineral fertilizers and the use of weed-infested organic ones, application of inadquate herbicides, unskilled work in the field, etc.
