The rainfed farmers who are usually faced with a less favorable environment than their counterparts in lowland irrigated areas have managed to evolve particular cropping technologies to adapt to their environment. Understanding and assessment of the existing farming systems in such an environment would be the initial step to attain the goal of developing/improving the productive capacities of rainfed farms. The Participatory Rural Appraisal for Planning (PRAP) was done in Barangay [village] Maasim, San Ildefonso, Bulacan and Barangay Linglingay, Munoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines]; (1) to document the existing rice-based farming systems technologies and the production and marketing set-up including the support systems in the target communities and, (2) to identify the problems and assess potentials and opportunities for the improvement of the rice-based farming systems practices. Results of the study revealed that despite the physical and socio-economic pressures, there are many options to improve the productivity of the rainfed rice-based farming systems in the area. One option to further develop the productive capacities of these non-irrigated farms is thru the establishment of small farm reservoirs (SFR) and shallow tube wells (STW) thru a municipal-based organization. Also efforts are needed for the improvement of the existing systems through on-farm research on technology. This may include the following: (1) component technology test on first crop of rice particularly on variety and fertilizer management, (2) inclusion of alternative crops after rice such as mungbean, corn, garlic, onion, and vegetables in the existing systems and, (3) studies to improve the support systems that include marketing, credit and postharvest services
