Wetland ricefields are major source of methane. Several studies have been conducted to determine the factors that control emission from ricefields. One of the major factors identified was straw incorporation which stimulates methane production in the soil. This study aims to determine the effect of late vs early incorporation of straw on methane emission. Methane was sampled at the IRRI long-term plots for three seasons using the sporadic sampling technique. Results showed the timing of straw incorporation has strong influence on methane emission from plots with early straw incorporation which was 81 percent lower than from plots with late straw incorporation during the 1996 wet season. Similarly, early straw incorporation gave 32 percent reduction in seasonal emission as compared to late straw incorporation. Total methane emission from pots with early straw incorporation was 69 percent lower than from late incorporation. For the entire season, early straw incorporation gave 54 percent lower than late straw incorporation. However in the 1997 dry season, the difference of methane emission between early and late straw incorporation was small. Results indicate that during the wet season, timing of straw incorporation may be one promising mitigation option for methane emission from rice fields. However, further evaluation should be undertaken during the dry season to determine whether early and late straw incorporation result in the same seasonal methane emission
