Assessment of the coastal degradation of Northeastern Leyte [Philippines]

Extensive degradation has been observed along the eastern coast of northeastern Leyte [Philippines] and this greatly affected the present configuration of this side of the island especially its coastal environment. The contributing factors to the widespread and massive degradation can be attributed to the possible rise of seawater level, probably resulting from global warming and/or plate tectonic movement continuously acting on the earth's crust. Beach drifting or longshore drift of the sediments, storm surges which occur during typhoon period producing abnormal wave action, man-made activities such as dam construction and diversion of the river flows, rampant mining of beach sand deposits and river aggregates, and conversion of mangrove into fishponds, are some of the major contributing factors to the deterioration of the eastern shores of Leyte. These environmental conditions resulted in coastal erosion producing a retreating shorelines, inundated wetlands, salt water intrusion into the agricultural lands and increased intrusion of saline waters into aquifers of some of the local barangays [villages] situated near or along the coast, depletion of the supply of river sediments, disastrous flooding, damages to infrastructures, loss of property and mangrove destruction
