1997
Castroverde, Y.L. | Onate, N.B. | Mabesa, H.A. (Camarines Sur State Agricultural Coll., Pili, Camarines Sur (Philippines))
In rice, estimated postharvest activity losses were 20.06 percent during the dry season and 23.62 percent during the wet season. Postharvest activities include harvesting, threshing, drying, milling, and storage. Based on the average potential yield of 4.5 ton/ha (dry season) and 3.5 ton/ha (wet season) and price of palay at P7.60/kg, economic losses are estimated at P6,860 and P6,283 per ha for dry and wet season, respectively. In corn, total postharvest losses incurred are estimated at 22.4 percent and 9.1 percent during the dry and wet season, respectively. This is equivalent to P6,081 and P1,289 reduction from the potential income of P27,148.00 and P14,161.00 per ha expected from corn production during the dry and wet season, respectively. In general, postharvest losses were attributed to the unfavorable weather conditions in the locality, lack of on-farm storage facilities, and low awareness of farmers on the use of mechanical threshers, shellers, and dryers. Hence, these technologies should be introduced to rice and corn producers not only in Camarines Sur, but in the Bicol Region through seminars, trainings, and extension workers. Support services in the form of soft loans, subsidies on equipment, and facilities from the private and government sectors should be provided to increase and ensure adoption of needed technologies
