Effect of hedgerow and wattling establishment on soil conservation and yield of selected crops on a sloping area within Mt. Makiling [Philippines]

The effect of hedgerow and wattling on surface runoff, soil loss and alley crop biomass and yield in a corn and peanut mixed cropping system was evaluated for a period of one cropping cycle. The effect of establishment cost of hedgerow and wattling on total production cost of the system was also analyzed. For the entire study period, the total rainfall recorded was 1,194.4 mm with the total of 26 rainy days producing runoff. Results showed that the highest volume of surface runoff and soil loss were obtained in the control treatment. The runoff and erosion rates in the hedgerow and wattling treatments were not significantly different. On the other hand, dry weight of the crop biomass and grain/pod yield were highest under the control. The lower yield of the crops under hedgerow and wattling was attributed to the reduction in cropped area. In both treatments, significant portion of the land was occupied by the structures (17 percent for hedgerow and 7 percent for wattling). Soil analyses showed that there were no significant changes in physical and chemical properties of the topsoil (0-15 cm depth) before and after cultivation. Furthermore, result of the study revealed the higher cost required in the establishment (material and labor) of hedgerow and wattling. The establishment cost for hedgerow and wattling constituted 32 percent and 37 percent, respectively, the total production cost incurred for both treatments
