Oil spill combating and monitoring in Thailand

With the economic expansion of over 8 percent for many years, Thailand's oil and gas consumption is rising steadily. Since most of the oil and gas transportation is via the sea and estuaries, Thailand is increasingly prone to oil spill incidence. Statistics of oil spill incidence in Thailand from 1973 to present showed few major oil spill incidences and several minor spills. To reduce oil pollution in Thailand's coastal water, the regulation of the Prime Minister's office in the prevention and combating of oil pollution was enacted in 1982 and later revised in 1995. The regulation created a Committee on the Prevention and Combating of Oil Pollution. This committee is responsible for formulating the policy and operation plan to prevent and combat oil pollutions. The Harbour Department has served as a focal point for this committee. Vessels and gears to combat oil pollution in Thai waters have been purchased. Helicopter surveillance was routinely hired to spot any oil spill incidences. The committee also sees the need for an operational oil spill modelling to predict the fate of oil pollution in the seas. Currently, an operational numerical oil spill model for Thailand is not available
