Mass propagation of mamalis (Pittosporum pentandrum [Blco.] Merr) through shoot tip cuttings

No significant differences in all parameters were detected which could be attributed to the effects of hormone concentration. From these results it can be deduced that Mamalis can be propagated through shoot tip cuttings even without the application of growth hormones. It is, however, noted that the number of Macroroots and root density were higher in the cuttings treated with 75 ppm NAA while root length was longest in the cuttings treated with 50 ppm NAA. The result of acclimatization of clones in the nursery for two months suggested that height of clones was significantly improved by growing them in pure garden soil instead of the mixture of soil and sand. However, there were no significant effects of fertilizer application as well as its interactions with potting media and hormone level on growth parameters such as root density, root length and leaf formation. In order to assess the feasibility of the technology, it is recommended that the clones be subjected to longer periods of acclimatization to allow stabilization of inoculant and the effect of fertilizer on tissue synthesis by the test plant. The study demonstrated the applicability of rooting of Mamalis stem cutting in the establishment of clonal orchards and Seed Production Areas (SPA)
