Investigation of the contaminants in water samples taken from artificial reefs sites

On-site observation of water samples [in Laiya and Talisay, Batangas, Philippines] at the time of collection indicated good water quality. All water samples gave good clean light penetration at 1,500 cm and temperature readings ranged from 28 deg C to 3 deg C. Time of fine artificial reef [ARs] immersion was from 0 to 11 years. The results indicated the AR's immersion did not affect water quality. Qualitative chemical tests performed on all samples gave negative results for organic sulfur and hydrocarbons and for aromatics, 2-amine compounds were detected to be present in all samples. This is also indicative of dissulfide bonds in tires and the absence if not very minimal oxidation reaction when subjected to undersea pressure and condition. The dissulfide bond in tires is a strong covalent bond and it is responsible for the toughness and rigidity of compact tires. Otherwise, if the bond is disrupted, sulfide can possibly form H2S or H2SO4 by oxidation and this is due to the determined pH of water. Only when this occurs under certain conditions, that it becomes hazardous to marine ecosystem. Zn concentration ranged from 0.018 ppm to 0.170 ppm. Pb was not detectable in water samples from Laiya to Talisay. Copper was present in all water samples in the same concentration of .007 ppm. Fe is not a deleterious metal. However, it may have considerable effect in the behaviour of other metals that may get in contact or associated with it. The pressure of iron can render other metals, such as lead and zinc, less available for biological intake
