Taxonomy of some Philippine leaf-feeding beetles of the subfamily Galerucinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)
1997
Barroga, G.F.
Out of 4 tribes, 40 genera and 156 species of Galerucinae recorded from the Philippines, 61 species in 19 genera are treated taxonomically. Three species are suspected to be new. The study was based on collections made from the 1940s to this year from different localities in the country. The species were primarily delimited through examination of the aedeagus. Descriptions or redescriptions of the species are presented with host plants and distributional data, supplemented with illustrations and keys. The distinguishing features of the tribes and the genera are presented and keys to both are provided. A list of the known tribes, genera and species in the Philippines is also included. Among the genera, Aulacophora and Monolepta had the most number of collected species with 18 in the latter. Galerucine beetles were also found to possess secondary sexual characters. Host plants belong to 49 species in 28 families, namely, Amaranthaceae, Araceae, Araliaceae, Arecaceae, Asteraceae, Celastraceae, Connaraceae, Convolvulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Labiateae, Lauraceae, Leeaceae, Maranthaceae, Meliaceae, Moraceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Rubiaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, Solanaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, Ulmaceae, Urticaceae, and Verbenaceae
