The purpose of the study was to determine the relation between soil compaction, oxidizability and nitrates concentration in the water of dug wells in the Opole province. The oxidizability index of water in 1040 farm wells in the province was 3.81 mgO2/sq. cm on average and showed positive correlation with the percent and localization of light soils. The concentration of nitrates in the wells examined was 9.80 mgN-NO3/cu. dm, close to the permissible concentration in potable water
