A case study on forest harvesting damages, structure and composition dynamic changes in the residual stand for dipterocarp forest in East Kalimantan, Indonesia

This research was conducted in the forest concession areas of PT. Narkata Rimba (NR) and PT. Kiani Lestari (KL), East Kalimantan, Indonesia. They consist of 4 permanent plots at NR and 8 at KL. The size of each plot is 100x100 m. The research was started in 1992. Observations and analysis were made on the effects of forest harvesting with the Indonesian Selection Cutting and Planting (TPTI) system on the residual stand of dipterocarp forest and its relation to the damages, structure and composition dynamic changes, natality, mortality, growth and the sustainability of the logged over forest. The results indicated that the levels of residual stand damages positively correlate to the logging intensity, and most of the damaged trees heavily injured. Harvesting caused loss of some species, but did not change the stand structure and composition of the species groups. The high tree mortality occurred immediately after harvest and afterwards, and drastically decreased in the third year. This opens up the possibility of developing measures to control the level of damages.
