The various possibilities for controlling the two formae speciales (teres and maculata) of Pyrenophora teres are investigated by the Laboratoire d'Ingenierie Agronomique, Ecole Nationale Superieure Agronomique de Toulouse. They include: (i) the genetic improvement of barley resistance through hybridization, mutations, Hordeum bulbosum L. technique and embryo culture; (ii) the assessment of the effects of the chemical environment (fungicides, herbicides and insecticides) on pathogen development; and (iii) possible changes in crop management techniques, with the introduction of biological control (i.e. the application of fungal and bacterial antagonists as biopesticides), to limit epidemic levels
