Effect of within-row spacing on growth and forage yield of three maize (Zea mays) varieties [Sudan]

A field experiment was conducted at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum during 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons to investigate the response of three maize varieties to different within-row spacing. The varieties used include. Across 8742, Mugtamah 45 and Tlatizapan 8784. The three within-row spacing were 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm. The treatments were factorially arranged in a randomized complete block design replicated four times. Narrow within-row spacing significantly increased plant height, plant population, leaf area index. Stem diameter, leaf area and relative growth rate increased with the increase in within-row spacing. Forage yield in terms of fresh and dry weight increased as within-row spacing decreased. Higher crude protein was obtained under wider spacing in the two seasons, while narrow spacing increased crude fibre in the second season. Tlaltizapan 8734 was the tallest variety, while the variety Across 8712 gave significantly higher leaf area, leaf area index, relative growth rate and consequently exceeded the other varieties in forage yield during both seasons. The highest crude fibre was recorded by the variety Tlaltizapan 8731, however, there was no significant difference between varieties in crude fibre. The significant variety X within-row spacing interaction for forage indicated a varination in response of varieties to within-row spacing
