The response of lactating cows to bone meal supplementation in South Kordufan [Sudan]

Fourteen lactating zebu (Bos indicus) cows (10 to 12 yrs old), in their second and third lactation periods weighing 228.38+under mins 1.79 kg/cow were used to study the effects of feeding bone meal, as a dietary phosphorus (p) source, on performance of transhumant cows grazing the rangelands of south Kordofan, Sudan. The cows were divided into two groups; a control and a bone meal supplemented group in a 2x7 completely randomized block design. The trial lasted for 90 days during the rainy season (July-October) of 1993. Bone meal feeding significantly (p 0.01) elevated their plasma p levels. However, no differences were observed between liveweights and liveweight changes of the cows in the two groups, but significantly (p 0.01) high liveweights and liveweight changes were found for calves of bone meal supplemented group, partial budgeting for milk yield showed a rate of return of 600 in bone meal supplemented cows when compared to the control. It was concluded that P supplements should be given to lactating cows grazing south Kordofan rangelands, and that other P sources should be compared to bone meal
