Response of fenugreek to sowing date and nitrogen fertilization in the heavy clay soil of Sennar [Sudan]
1997
Khashmelmous, A.E. (Sennar Research Station, Sennar (Sudan))
An experiment was conducted for three consecutive seasons (1989/90 to 1991/92) to investigate the response of fenugreek (locally known as Hilba) to the time of sowing and nitrogen application on the heavy clay soil of the farm of Sennar Agricultural Research Station. Treatments included three nitrogen levels (0, 1N, and 2N where 1N=40 kg N/feddan) and five sowing dates at fortnightly intervals from October 6 to December 5 in the first two seasons, and a sixth sowing date was added (December 20) in season 1991/92. Results obtained showed significant (P=0.05) increase in seed yield and yield components as a result of nitrogen application. Early sowing (between Oct. 21 and Nov.20) produced significant (P=0.05) variation in yield parameters measured. The best interaction was between the application of 2N and sowing on Nov.5 specially during seasons 1989/90 and 1990/91
