Studies on the natural enemy complex of cereal stem borer, CHILO PARTELLUS (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) [Sudan]

The spotted stalk borer, Chilo partellus (Swinh.) (Lep: pyralidae) is a serious pest of sorghum and other graminaceous crops. In this thesis literature about the distribution, biology, ecology and control methods with special emphasis on the biological control of this pest was reviewed. The present study investigates some aspects of the life systems of this pest and its parasitoids in Shambat area. Life budgets of C. partellus larvae and pupae and their parasitoids were collected in Shambat area. The larval stage was the most abudant in the area of the study and the pupal stage was the most reliable one in forecasting the future population changes of C. partellus. Six larval parasites and three pipal parasites were observed to attack C. partellus. The larval parasites were: The unidentified phorid parasite, the unidentified tachinid parasite, Anatrichus sp., Stenobracon deesae, the unidentified dipterous parasite and Goniozus indicus. The pupal parasites were: Brachymeria sp., the unidentified phorid parasite and the unidentified dipterous parasite. The larval parasite complex of this pest cause up to 25 mortality of larval in the field at the end of August and the middle of September. The parasite complex of pupae cause up to 100 pipal mortality during early March and at the end of December. They were found to be the most effective in the regulation of C. partellus population in the field. The parasite complex of C. partellus larvae and pupae are, indigenous and well adspted to the host's environment, hence, they probably contribute efficiently to the regulation of the populations of this pest in the population dynamics of the species. It could be used as a key factor in a predictive model of the population of Chilo partellus
