Propagation of Balanites aegyptiaca by stem cuttings [Sudan]
1997

The present investigation was carried to study the possibility of propagating Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del. vegetatively by stem cuttings, and to check the influence of the season and growth regulators (type and concentration) on the formation of adventitious roots. Two experiments were conducted at two different seasons. The first in september 1995 and the second in December 1995. The cutting were treated with indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) growth regulators at four different concentrations o (control), 4000, 8000 and 12000 ppm. The cuttings (hard wood of 15-20 cm long) were taken early in the morning treated with auxins and an antioxidant agent ascorbic acid and inserted immediately in the rooting medium (sand) which was sterilized by oven dry heating at 120 C for 3 hours. The cuttings were then raised in plastic covered frame champers. Thy were irrigated daily by a sprinkler. After two months, number of leaves, thorns, branches, fresh and dry weights of the leaves and shoots were determined. The cuttings were then uprooted and the rooting percentage, root fresh and dry weights were determined. The use of IBA and NAA was noted to have a better influence on all measured parameters. The results of most of the measured parameters seem to be better when the cuttings were treated with IBA. The various concentrations have different influences on these parameters, the concentration 4000 ppm proved to be the best concerning shoot fresh and dry weights, leaf fresh and dry weights, number of leaves, thorns and branches. However, the concentration 8000 ppm gave the best results regarding root fresh and dry weights and the rooting percentage. The cuttings taken in September gave no roots at all and they dried and died after a month, while winter's cuttings gave successful rooting
