Effect of salinity and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on growth and symbiotic properties of faba bean [Sudan]

Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of salinity and inoculation with VAM and/or Rhizobium on growth and symbiotic properties of four faba bean cultivars. Salinity significantly reduced fresh and dry weights of shoot, root, nodules, pode, number of pode and nodules, total nitrogen content and nitrogen fixation. Inoculation with Rhizobium and/or with VAM significantly increased all measured parameter in normal and in saline condition. Superphosphate fertilization significantly increased nodulation, fresh and dry matter yield. VAM inoculation significantly increased the mycorrhizal infection whereas, high doses of superphosphate significantly reduced it. These results indicated that Rhizobium and mycorrhizae could be used as biological fertilizer and could be used to reduce the harmful effect of salinity. The regression models were generated for data and a negative relationship between the salinity and nodules number, whereas the relationship between nodules number and plant weight was positive
