Seven lines of hull-less spring barley and two control cultivars were grown in two cropping systems in a maize production area in 1994-1995. Mineral fertilizers (50 kg N, 55 kg P2O5 and 55 kg K2O per hectare) and pesticides were used in the conventional growing system. The second growing system was without chemicals. Barley followed winter wheat and sugar beet. Cultivation systems with chemicals positively influenced yield elements and grain yield. The systems did not significantly influence TGW, composition of grain or specific weight. As for the nutrition components of grain in the cropping system with chemical inputs, the concentrations of beta-glucans, proteins, essential amino acids and lysine were significantly higher, but only in one year. The chemical-free cropping system was significantly higher in oil content, and starch content and lysine rate in protein (significantly only in one year)
