Concentration of 25 selected elements in 2 year old needles of Picea abies (L.) Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L. from 141 permanent monitoring plots (network of 4 x 4 km) from the industrial region of Ziar nad Hronom (Slovakia) was assessed in relation to boundary values. 81.4 percent of the total variance was explained by principal component analysis of 8 components. The highest concentrations of Al, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, F, Fe, Hg, Li, Ni, Pb, Sr and V were found in the A pollution zone and are apparently connected with production of aluminium. In zone B there were increased levels of As, Ba, K, Mn, N, Na, Rb, S and Se which may be connected with the operation of a thermal power plant. The highest values of Cu and Zn were found in zone C and of Ca and Mg in zone D. Correlation analysis of 25 elements from spruce and pine needles from the Ziar region was executed provided that the number of high-correlation pairs (r is greater than or equal to 0.9) leads to an expectation of mutual element reaction. Only highly positively correlative pairs of elements, which are emitted in zone A in the region of aluminium plants were found. In zone B, neither a positive nor negative correlated relation was found among pairs of elements with r higher or equal to positive or negative 0.9. In zone C only a high-positively correlated pair between Be/Co was found
