A polymerase chain reaction method was used to detect salmonella, employing primers ST11 and ST15, cell lysis by sodium dodecylsulfate in NaOH solution at 95 degrees C, and detection by agarose gel electrophoresis. From the bacterial culture to the result the detection took less than 6 hours and had a sensitivity of 10 *[5) CFU per ml. The method was specific for salmonella, giving positive results with Salmonella enteritidis, S. typhimunium and S. adelaide, and negative results with related non-salmonella strains (Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp. and others
