The physical and chemical properties, industrial production and use of chlorinated phenols, which are classified among priority pollutants, are reviewed. Analytical methods for their determination in water, soil and food are also presented. Data on their occurrence in environmental sectors and in food indicate low levels (nanograms per kg, per litre). Data concerning the exposure of the general population are limited and their exact evaluation is therefore extremely difficult. The ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) has been suggested only for pentachlorophenol
