The basis of collection of tobacco genetic resources represents varieties for air curing grown in Slovakia at the time of establishment of the independent Research Inst. of Tobacco Industry in Bab in 1951. The institute preserves 553 genetic resources, of which 44 are of domestic origin. The most represented are genotypes of the cultivated species Nicotiana tabacum L. - 511. The other cultivated species Nicotiana rustica L. is represented by 38 samples. The collection contains 4 wild species. Studies have been aimed at genetic control of content, decomposition and deficit of chlorophyll; tobacco mildew resistance; genetic determination of quantitative characters in the system of combination breeding, and at the evaluation of biological-morphological characteristics representing the economical character of genetic resources. Rapid decomposition of chlorophyll as a spontaneous mutation (pale yellow) was recommended for use in breeding of flue-cured tobacco, and chemomutation white for air curing
