Virulence of the wheat leaf rust population in Slovakia in 1996

The reactions to 64 single pustule isolates of wheat leaf rust collected in 1996 at 15 localities in Slovakia were tested on near-isogenic lines of cv. Thatcher possessing Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3, Lr9, Lr11, Lr15, Lr16, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26 and Lr28. Genes Lr9, Lr19, Lr24 and Lr28 were effective to all isolates. Ineffective were genes Lr11, Lr21 and Lr23. Gene Lr2c was effective only to two isolates. The majority of isolates conformed to race 61SaBa (64%), followed by race 14 (12%), 77SaBa (11%), 2SaBa (5%), 77 and 61 (each 3%) and 14SaBa (2%). The most common race 61SaBa was found at all locations but one. Virulence to the cv. Soldur (Triticum durum L.), found in 1995 for the first time, was determined in several isolates that all belonged to race 14. Eight isolates were used to test the registered winter wheat cultivars, whereas advanced lines and cultivars from the State Varietal Trial were tested with six isolates from the 1996 virulence survey carried out in the Slovak Republic. Previous results were confirmed. Of the cultivars registered in 1996 Boka was susceptible to all isolates. Cvs. Estica and Vendur (T. durum) showed resistance to some isolates. Of 35 tested advanced lines and cultivars of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), only five were susceptible to all six isolates. Others showed some specific resistance. Of the Slovak advanced lines SO-997 was resistant to all isolates, SO-1441 to all but one isolate. The Dutch cultivar Cebeco 952 was also resistant to all isolates. The most common genes for leaf rust resistance in registered cultivars and advanced lines seem to be Lr3, followed by Lr26 alone or in combination with Lr3. However, the postulation of the presence of Lr3 and/or Lr26 has to be taken for preliminary. Other genes for leaf rust resistance were more difficult for identification
