The size of aleuronic layer lobes in the region of the abdominal crack was determined with the use of fluorescent microscopy and nitrogen content was determined with the use of the CNS-2000 analyser, in grains of 67 cultivars of six grain crop species after splitting each grain into halves. A correlation was found between the size of aleuronic layer lobes and protein content (r=0.531++). By regression analysis it was determined that with an increase in lobe size of 50 micrometers, protein content rises by 1 % (with a variation span of protein content of 4.7 - 18.8 %, and that of lobe size 32-432 micrometers). The authors recommend using the size of aleuronic layer lobes for indirect selection for protein content in the early stage of breeding, with the use of one grain and subsequent checking of its offspring
