In order to utilize the variations from indigenous corn germplasm for baby corn breeding programs, a 3 year project of baby corn germplasm collection and evaluation was implemented during 1987-1989 at Chiangmai Field Crop Research Center. The results were summarized as follows: In 1987, 9 varieties called CMB Series and 183 half-sib families from Rangsit 1 variety were collected and increased seed by sister and brother pollination (sib). Then, they were evaluated for useful characteristics of baby corn in 1988 such as number of ears/plant, weight of baby corn ears with husk, weight of baby corn ears after husk removal, weight of ears in standard size and ratio between weight of ears with husk and weight of ears after husk removal. In 1989, 10 baby corn hybrid and open-pollinated varieties and 20 elite full-sib families from CMB 8704 variety were again collected as well as evaluated for those characteristics. The records and remnant seeds were stored in germplasm room at Chiangmai Field Crop Research Center for further use in baby corn breeding program.
