Effects of sulfur dioxide on sulfur accumulation and anatomical change of plants on high terrain of Mae Moh's project area, Changwat Lampang
1994
Pongthep Suwanwaree
Investigation of total sulfur accumulation and anatomical change of plant in 5 concentration zones of SO2 according to mathematical model of EGAT (100, 200, 300, 500 and 1,000 micro g.m ** (-3)) around Mae Moh generating plant, Mae Moh district, and control site at Cha Hom district, Changwat Lampang, was carried out between March 1993 and April 1994. Higher sulfur content in plants was mostly appeared in rainy season while lower content was detected in dry season. Leaf tissue accumulated sulfur more than stem tissue. The ranking of sulfur content is in the order of Saab Sua (Eupatorium odoratum L.) Bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea Willd) Pradoo (Pterocarpus macrocarpus Kurz) Liphao Yai (Lygodium flexuosum Sw.) Teak (Tectona grandis L.) and E. odoratum L. L. flexuosum Sw. P. macrocarpus Kurz B. arundinacea Willd T. grandis L. in leaf and stem, respectively. These plants adapted themselves by increasing in size of upper and lower epidermal cells, palisade cells, spong cell layer, and guard cell number of leaf and in total sulfur content in both leaf and stem tissue significantly. Eleven plant species treated to 5 SO2 dosages ranged from 0-10 ppm in a closed chamber at 26-32 deg C RH 90-95 % and light intensity 5.35-10.45 micro mol.s ** (-1) .m ** (-2) for 1 h. After exposing to SO2 18 h, they showed an interveinal and marginal chlorosis and necrosis of leaf. Chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll decreased, however total sulfur content was found to be increased significantly in leaf. Sensitivity to SO2 was T. grandis L., Millingtonia hortensis Linn.f. (0.5 ppm) Delonix regia (Bojer ex. Hook) Rafin, Swietenia mahogani Jacg., Selaginella involuta Spreng. (1.0 ppm) Terminalia catappa Linn., Tabebuia pentaphylla Hermsl. (2.0 ppm) P. indicus Willd, Albizzia procera Benth., Afzelia xylocarpa Craib, E. odoratum L. (10.0 ppm).
