Study of water and soil qualities in grouper net cage culture area at Khlong Pakbara, La ngu district, Satun province was carried out in October 1993. The study areas were classified into 3 areas. Area 1 is the native area of Khlong Pakbara that located out of culture area. Area 2 is the cage with age of under 3 years old (1-3 years). Area 3 is the cage with age of over 3 years old (4-7 years). The result shows the depth, salinity and conductivity were widely varied (3.7-7.5 meters, 0.3-30.5 ppt and 0.6-47.2 ms/cm, respectively) because of a strong tidal current and fresh water run off. Water quality parameters among these 3 areas showed a non significant difference (p0.05). Soil quality showed a significant difference in parameters as organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ignition loss, total sulfide and chemical oxygen demand. These significant differences are between area 1 and area 3, and between area 2 and area 3. The result indicated that the accumulation of organic matter in term of nitrogen and phosphorus in cage culture area was very high. This evidence was associated with time. Comparing to area 1, if farmer reared fish for more than 3 years it will get worst to the cage beneath substratum. Therefore soil quality may be a possible factor promoting the environment problems specially during the critical period in water quality and will effect to fish production later.
