NS 104 was developed by intermating between two populations, SW1(MMS)C2F2 and Pop.28(DMR), of the national corn research project conducted by Nakhon Sawan Field Crops Research Center (NSW FCRC) in 1986. The resulting F1 population was advanced one generation by radom mating. After the second generation of random mating, the bulk sample of harvested seed was designated as NS 104. In the regional yield trial and farm trial evaluated over 24 environments at normal planting density in 1988, NS 104 outyielded SW1(MMS)C2F2 by 10 %. In late rainy season 1988 the results of the regional yield trial tested over 4 environments showed that NS 104 outyielded SW1(MMS)C2F2 by 21 %. This variety was released by the Department of Agriculture as Nakhon Sawan 1 (NS1) in July 1989 because of its demonstrated to give high yield and have good adaptability to various environments of the testing sites.
