Storage of film - wrapped 'Montong' durian fruit and pulp
1994
Suchera Yeangyuksakol
Montong' durian fruits were stored at 15 deg C in the 19 * 19 * 35 cm corrugated cartons (1 fruit/carton) each having 10 ventilation holes (118.57 cm ** (2)). The cartons were unwrapped or wrapped with heat - shrinkable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyolefin films. The effect of ethylene absorbent (eA) put in the wrapped carton was also investigated. The results revealed that the fruits in all treatments had a storage life of 20 days. Use of eA resulted in less CO2 and C2H4 accumulation in the wrapped carton, decreased pulp softing rate, and slower increasing rate of total sugars content. It prevented fruit dehiscence, but did not affect changes in peel and pulp colors, soluble solids, titratable acidity, acetaldehyde and ethanol. Film wrapping alone or in combination with eA decreased fruit weight loss by 50-66 % of the control. Durain pulp was placed on foam trays overwrapped with different plastic films and stored at 1 and 4 deg C. The storage life of durian pulp at both temperatures was 32 days. CO2 and C2H4 concentrations in the package decreased with time in storage. The highest CO2 and C2H4 concentrations were detected in the tray with stretch PVC wrap, followed by those with shrink polyolefin and PVC wraps. Pulp weight loss at 1 deg C was 2.50-2.78 % whereas that at 4 deg C was 3.82-4.08 %. Changes in pulp color, soluble solids, titratable acidity, total sugars, acetaldehyde and ethanol were not influenced by any treatment.
