Effects of Sesbania rostrata Brem. and Oberm. as green manure on yields of transplanted and direct seeded rice in Northeast saline soils
1994
Sompon Waipanya
Effect of Sesbania rostrata incorporated as green manure at 60 days on yields of 2 rice varieties (RD 15 and KDML 105) with 2 methods of transplanting and direct seeding cultivation were experimented in the farmer's field at Ban Tha - Bo, Ampher Thawatburi, Roi - Et Province during 1990/91. The soil is saline sandy loam, pH 4.8, EC (1:2) 2.6 dS/m, 0.32 % OM, 3.5 ppm available P and 0.85 me/l soluble K. The results showed that across the treatments, S. rostrata as green manure significantly increased rice yields from 398.0 to 589.3 kilograms per rai due to the nitrogen accumulation of 26.2 kilograms per rai. There were no significant differences in rice yields between transplanting and direct seeding methods. Furthermore, S. rostrata increased transplanted rice yield by 237.8 kilograms per rai compared to direct seeded rice yield by 144.9 kilograms per rai. The average rice yields of RD 15 was significantly higher than KDML 105 which were 514.1 and 473.3 kilograms per rai respectively.
