Factor influencing growth and yield of Gloriosa Lily (Gloriosa superba Linn.)

A study on growth and yield of Gloriosa Lily (Gloriosa superba Linn.) affected by various factors were studied at the Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University, Kamphaengsaen Campus and at Tambol Talesap, Amphur Patue, Chumphon Province during July 1991 - April 1993. By planting part of rhizomes weighted from 0.5 to 20.8 g, the weight of planting rhizomes was positively correlated with the length of main stem, stem diameter, number of flowers and number of pods but negatively correlated with first flowering date. Equal weight of rhizome but different in life cycle number showed different effect on yield and flowering percentage. The dry seed yield per plant and flowering percentage from seven gram part of rhizome more than two life cycles were 8.54 g and 71.43 %, respectively, while rhizomes of the same weight with two life cycles were 4.47 g and 50 %, respectively. The study on growth and new rhizomes formation revealed that rhizome formation developed synchronizely with aerial stem. The height of aerial stems creased at 70 days where the rhizome enlargement ceased at 90 days. The study on effect of light intensities on seed yield of gloriosa lily found that, maximum yield per plant (1.78 g) was obtained from 17.5 % shading. More over growth and development of small rhizomes were affected by fertilizer ratios. The N:P:K ratio of 1:1:1 provided the highest growth of both upper part and rhizome of gloriosa lily.
