[Rotation crop promotion project in irrigated areas of the Central and the nearby regions in the crop year 1990/1991]
1992
Chan Chimphali (Department of Agricultural Extension, Bangkok (Thailand))
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE) initiated the rotation crop promotion project in irrigated areas of the Central and the nearby regions in the crop year 1990/1991. This was due to the farmers' preference to non-stop rice cultivation throughout the year resulting pest accumulation and degraded agroecological systems. A lot of incentives especially seed was provided to the farmers to facilitate the farming activities because of the first implementation of the project, 28,900 farm families joint the project sharing the rotation crop areas, in stead of the dry-season rice, of 202,559 rais dividing into maize 28,174 rais, mung bean 144,126 rais, sweet corn 10,185 rais, sesame 900 rais and vegetables 18,634 rais. Besides, the DOAE conducted a training course for 11,020 participation farmers and determined supplement activities e.g. field day, mobile unit. More importantly, private sectors were invited to purchase the farmers' production at a reasonable price. Survey was also made to investigate farmers' attitude towards the rotation crops showing that their adoption of the crops was as high as 74 % while the rejectors justified on account of: (1) insufficient irrigation system (2) farmers' accustom to dry-season rice cultivation (3) farmars' belief on higher profitability of rice. The project will be carried on until 1996 with the final target area of 1.0 million rais.
