Fish species and abundance in the proposed Pak Mun Reservoir area, Ubon Ratchathani province [Thailand]

Study of fish species and their abundance in the proposed Pak Mun Reservoir area, Ubon Ratchathani province was conducted during the rainy season (July 1992) and dry season (March 1993) periods. Estimates of fish abundance were done by spot poisoning was 5.72 kg/rai (35.75 kg/ha). The fishes belong to 19 families and 51 species of carp 31.19 %, catfish 9.78 %, murrel 19.88 % and miscellaneous species 39.14 %. The ratio between forage to carnivorous species (F/C) was 1.56. The catch per unit effort by electrofishing was 3.03 kg/ha, composed of 16 families 45 species. Fish diversity index ranged from 2.32-3.77. Socio-economic surveys were conducted around Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces where the fishing activity is high. Purse seine is the most popular fishing gear. Average daily catch by using the gear was 10 kg valued at about 150 Baht (25 Baht = 1 US dollar). The other popular fishing gear is gillnet with the average daily catch is 2.61 kg valued at about 52 Baht. Long-line hooks give an average daily catch of 3.96 kg valued at 79 Baht. The subsistence level fishing gears include castnet, harpoon gun and bamboo trap.
