Effect of nickel on growth and metabolism of young wheat and corn plants

This study was carried out with Ni concentrations of 10E-7, 10E-5, and 10E-3 mol/cubic dm. The studied Ni conc. had a tendency of increasing the contents of macro- and micro-elements in wheat (except K). In corn, Ni reduced the content of micro-elements in the above-ground parts and the content of almost all mineral elements in the root. The low Ni conc. as opposed to the high ones, caused no significant water deficit. The content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and total carotenoids) increased in wheat leaves at the low Ni conc.; increases in corn leaves were evident even with the high Ni conc.. Similar tendencies were observed for chlorophyll fluorescence. The Ni conc. of 10E-7 mol/cubic dm stimulated most of the studied morphological parameters; certain parameters were even stimulated by the Ni conc. of 10E-5 mol/cubic dm. The Ni conc. of 10E-3 mol/cubic dm inhibited all morphological parameters. The low Ni conc. increased the activity of SOD (superoxyde dismutase) in both plant genotypes. Amount of oxygen radicals decreased in wheat while in corn it increased with increases in Ni conc. The intensity of lipid peroxidation increased with increases in Ni conc. Ni increased the content of soluble proteins in both species.
